The availability of various social media platforms has made connecting with people very convenient but when one is in a completely new environment, connecting with new people and groups can be a bit challenging using the predominant social media platforms. This is the similar problem we faced when we were freshers in Kathmandu University – as in a sea of unfamiliar faces it took us a few months to just find and interact with the fellow classmates online, let alone find about and join different clubs of Kathmandu University. During the pandemic, freshers were finding it even more difficult to interact with their own class mates as they were restricted to their laptop/mobile screens. Considering these things, we created a mobile app, “KU-Net”, as our fifth semester project.
“KU-Net ” is a social media platform focused on making connections among students easy by helping them find common interest and common ground among one another. Through “KU-Net”, students are able to join groups of their interests and chat with the group members. Through upvotes and ranking systems present in the application, one can get their contributions known among their friends, which indirectly promotes friendly competition as well . There’s an option for sharing the resources for the users. One could argue that creation of groups/clubs and social interaction is possible via the predominant social network as well, but they are multipurpose applications, and cannot be as effective as a sole educational purpose medium designed for one’s own campus.
